The 747-8 "will have novel or unusual design features associated with the architecture and connectivity capabilities of the airplane's computer systems and networks, which may allow access to external computer systems and networks," the FAA wrote. "Connectivity to external systems and networks may result in security vulnerabilities to the airplane's systems. The applicable airworthiness regulations do not contain adequate or appropriate safety standards for these design features." Therefore, the FAA added special conditions it deemed "necessary to establish a level of safety equivalent to that established by the existing airworthiness standards." The conditions? The applicant must ensure electronic system security protection for the aircraft control domain and airline information domain from access by unauthorized sources external to the airplane, including those possibly caused by maintenance activity. The applicant must ensure that electronic system security threats from external sources are identified and assessed, and that effective electronic system security protection strategies are implemented to protect the airplane from all adverse impacts on safety, functionality, and continued airworthiness. http://blog.seattlepi.com/aerospace/archives/191558.asp **************** Fairchild SA227-DC Metro III Gear Collapse on Landing http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:zIoUsNNEKmUgGM%3Ahttp://upload.wikimedia. org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9b/VH-VEU.JPG/240px-VH-VEU.JPG Date: 19-JAN-2010 Time: 17:55 Type: Fairchild SA227-DC Metro III Operator: BinAir Registration: D-CKPP C/n / msn: DC-805B Fatalities: Fatalities: 0 / Occupants: 2 Other fatalities: 0 Airplane damage: Substantial Location: Stuttgart Airport - Germany Phase: Landing Nature: Cargo Departure airport: Brno-Tuĝany - LKTB Destination airport: Stuttgart Airport - EDDS Narrative: On final approach the pilot received a sign of a possible gear trouble and made a fly-by. The ATC confirmed that the gear was fully down. Upon landing the right main-gear collapsed and the aircraft went of the runway into grass. Both on board were unhurt, but the aircraft received substantial damage. (ZNH) said Wednesday it plans to buy 20 Airbus A320 aircraft and expects to swing to a profit for 2009 mainly due to lower fuel costs. The aircraft will be delivered in stages in 2011-2013. The airline has agreed to buy 20 aircraft with a catalogue price of US$76.9 million each, it said in a statement. But the total bill for the aircraft, which the company will pay with cash and bank loans, will be "significantly lower" than the catalogue price, it said. Once all the aircraft have been delivered, the airline's available ton kilometers--a measure of capacity--will have increased 4.5% from the end of December, it said. In a separate statement, China Southern said it expects its 2009 results to substantially improve from a year earlier because of lower fuel costs. A gradual recovery in demand for aviation and transportation services also helped, it said. The firm posted a 2008 net loss of CNY482.9 million. http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20100120-704035.html?mod=WSJ_latestheadl ines *************** Boeing reports 851 orders for 787 (AFP) PARIS — US aircraft manufacturer Boeing has received 851 orders for its long-range 787 Dreamliner plane from 56 airlines, the head of Boeing France said, describing the tally as "historic." Yves Galland told a press conference the order total took account of 84 cancellations, 83 of which were received last year. But he said the order total was "historic for the launch of an aircraft." The first of the planes will be delivered to the Japanese carrier ANA in the last quarter of 2010. Because of composite materials used in its construction, the 787, which has made 15 test flights but is two years behind schedule, can cut fuel consumption by 20 percent, according to Galland. "We are very aware of the problems that we have encountered but we are very confident about the future," he added. ***************** DHL to Donate Ohio Airport for Redevelopment http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:Yk1_UIW_MNipeM%3Ahttp://www.surfrescue.co m.au/pics/dhl.jpg Package shipper DHL to donate Ohio airport to region for redevelopment WILMINGTON, Ohio January 19, 2010 (AP) The Associated Press Public officials say an agreement by package delivery company DHL Express to donate its abandoned airport in southwest Ohio to the region will boost efforts to attract new companies and jobs. State and local officials and DHL executives announced the preliminary agreement Tuesday in Wilmington, saying it should be final by Feb. 28. DHL declined to give the property donation's value. The company will pay for some environmental cleanup on the 1,500 acres and pay up to $625,000 to cover transaction costs of the Clinton County Port Authority, which is accepting the donation for the region. About 8,000 jobs have been lost at the airport since DHL announced in 2008 that it was pulling out and moving operations to the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. http://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory?id=9605850 ***************** Curt Lewis, P.E., CSP CURT LEWIS & ASSOCIATES, LLC
