Flight Safety Information June 7, 2011 - No. 116 In This Issue Plane makes emergency landing at Mitchell Airport reopens after emergency landing forces closure Plane makes emergency landing at Mitchell MILWAUKEE - A flight from Cincinnati to Milwaukee was involved in an emergency at Mitchell International Monday night. The SkyWest Airlines plane had some trouble with its landing gear. One part of it got stuck, so it had to use the single gear that was able to come down. "I was right next the window and saw the sparks flying, so that was scary, but the captain did great, (and) the crew did great," said Charles Hill, a passenger, to TODAY'S TMJ4's Charles Benson. "(Sparks) were flying up from the bottom. It was like a wing for a boat," said one woman. "It was just sparks everywhere." It may have been a bumpy ride, but all 41 passengers and three crewmembers on board were safely taken off the plane upon landing. "I've had worse landings," claimed one man. This is the second time in less than one year that a Skywest CRJ200 plane has landed at Mitchell International Airport while having trouble with its landing gear. The airport opened about 11:30 p.m. after the emergency landing of a Delta Air Lines flight two hours earlier, airport spokeswoman Pat Rowe said. The pilot of the flight, operated by SkyWest Airlines, reported a problem with the aircraft's landing gear upon approach to the airport, Rowe said. The plane landed a short time later, and all passengers were taken by bus from the runway to the airport's terminal, Rowe said. Early Tuesday SkyWest spokeswoman Jessica Bowers said one passenger was taken to a hospital and that no further information on the passenger was available. Because of construction work on one of the airport's two runways, the airport was forced to close until the plane could be moved safely from the runway, Rowe said. Bowers said the flight had come from Cincinnati and was carrying 41 passengers and three crew members. She would not comment on the landing gear or possible injuries. SkyWest said additional information would be posted at www.skywest.com. Source: http://www.jsonline.com/news/milwaukee/123298138.html Curt Lewis, P.E., CSP CURT LEWIS & ASSOCIATES, LLC
