(AP)-A United flight made an unscheduled landing in Omaha after the pilot became ill. United spokeswoman Karen May said Tuesday that Flight 1637 was on its way from Des Moines to Denver on Monday night when the decision was made to set down in Omaha. The co-pilot landed the Boeing 737 without incident just after 9 p.m., and May says the pilot was taken to a local hospital. May says United put up the passengers overnight in Omaha, and they're scheduled to complete their travel later Tuesday. May says there were 154 passengers and six crew members aboard the original flight. May said Tuesday that the captain "is OK." She wouldn't provide other information about him or her. http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_24822055/co-pilot-lands-jet-omaha-after-pilot-takes Back to Top Cape Coral man arrested on charges he pointed laser at aircraft (Florida) A Cape Coral man is facing a felony charge after police say he pointed a laser at a plane en route to Southwest Florida International Airport. Stephen Clyde Plock, 51, also pointed the laser at a Lee County Aviation helicopter responding to the complaint. According to Cape police, Plock was with two other people outside a home on SW 26th Court Saturday evening when the incidents occurred. Plock is charged with misuse of a laser lighting device, a third-degree felony. He has since bonded out of jail. "Given the attention that cases such as this received in the years following 9/11, it is stunning that anyone would do this," Sgt. Dana Coston said. "Laser illumination devices that are available to the public are more powerful and affordable than ever before, and the potential to blind or disorient a pilot mid-flight is very real and very dangerous." http://www.news-press.com/article/20131231/CRIME/131231021/Cape-Coral-man-arrested-charges-he- pointed-laser-aircraft Back to Top Passenger Plane's Jet Engine Catches Fire At San Jose Airport SAN JOSE (KCBS) - Firefighters put out an engine fire on a passenger jet at Mineta San Jose International Airport Tuesday morning, airport officials said. The report of the engine fire on Delta Flight 1056 to Minneapolis came in around 7:55 a.m. An airport spokeswoman told KCBS that the jet was one of the 11 planes delayed Tuesday morning due to foggy conditions. It was scheduled to leave SJC at 6:40 a.m. but was waiting on the tarmac to leave. The pilot took the plane back to Gate 7 at terminal A where firefighters from the city of San Jose and the airport put out the fire. There were no reports of injuries and passengers on the flight were taken off the plane. Delta representatives have yet to return calls for comment. http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2013/12/31/passenger-planes-jet-engine-catches-fire-at-san-jose-airport/ Back to Top Back to Top Bombardier Wins Multibillion-Dollar Jet Order Unidentified Customer Orders 38 Business Aircraft TORONTO- Bombardier Inc. BBD.B.T -0.65% said Tuesday it signed a multibillion-dollar deal to sell 38 business aircraft to an unidentified customer, a positive development for the Canadian maker of planes and trains after its subway division ended a contract with the U.K.'s London Underground. Bombardier said in a release the jet order included 28 Global business jets and 10 Challenger 605 business jets. The Montreal company didn't disclose the contract's specific value but said the transaction is worth about $2.2 billion based on 2013 list prices for these types of planes. A Bombardier spokeswoman couldn't immediately be reached for comment. The announcement comes the same day Bombardier said its contact to modernize the signaling equipment for part of the London Underground subway system was terminated. A reason for the contract's collapse, which was signed in 2011, wasn't given, but it said "a great deal" of the preparatory work had already been completed. Bombardier's train and jet businesses face a challenging environment as the uneven global economic recovery continues to weigh on demand for its products. In October, the manufacturer reported a 14.5% drop in its third-quarter profit from the year-ago period, blaming in part disappointing market conditions for its aerospace division. http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304137304579292871030273830 Curt Lewis
