Vaccinated New Zealanders in Australia will be able to travel home from February 27 without needing to stay at state-managed quarantine facilities. While citizens in the rest of the world will be able to do so two weeks later, according to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. That can't come soon enough for expatriates like Moira Duffy, who is currently living in San Francisco. "I had actually decided only two weeks ago that I was going to stop even looking at updates around the border situation because I just couldn't handle the emotional rollercoaster any longer, it was too hard. And it was starting to really get at me because it's, um, I miss home, a lot, yeah." But there will be a phased reopening for tourists - with frustrated travel bodies urging for additional isolation periods to be removed altogether to revive the struggling tourism sector. Foreign vaccinated backpackers and some skilled workers can enter the country from mid-March. But tourists from Australia and other visa-free countries will only be allowed in from July. Travelers from the rest of the world will be kept out until October. All visitors will have to self-isolate for 10 days. Here's Ardern on the phased reopening plan. "Overall, opening back up in this managed way balances inflows of travelers so people can reunite and fill our workforce shortages while also ensuring our healthcare system can manage an increase in cases. After all our strategy with Omicron is to slow the spread, and our borders are a part of that strategy." Fortress New Zealand has had some of the toughest COVID-related border controls in the world, keeping infections and deaths low. But critics have called the system unfair. Tens of thousands of ex-pats have been cut off from families back home, residents have lost jobs and businesses dependent on international tourism have been left devastated. https://www.yahoo.com/news/zealand-delays-full-reopening-until-153652210.html Alcohol sales to return to Southwest flights after nearly two years Southwest Airlines will resume alcohol sales on most of its flights this month after nearly two years, a pause it extended last spring because of a surge in disruptive passengers. The move further heightened tension between the airline and its 16,000-member flight attendants’ union, which called the resumption of alcohol sales “unsafe and irresponsible.” The Dallas-based airline originally paused alcohol and other services in March 2020 at the start of the pandemic. Last week, the airline’s COO said the carrier would likely bring alcohol sales back late in the first quarter or early in the second quarter. Starting Feb. 16, Southwest will sell alcohol, including beer, wine, rum, tequila and vodka on flights at least 176 miles long. It is also said it will also add tonic water, apple juice, Coke Zero, Dr. Pepper, hot tea and hot cocoa to current lineup of non-alcoholic beverages. All U.S. airlines slashed onboard service during the pandemic and food and other beverage services are starting to make a comeback. American Airlines and Alaska Airlines scaled back some recent service expansions under pressure from flight attendants unions, which argued it would increase the amount of time passengers would not be wearing face masks, which are federally mandated on board, though they can be lowered when drinking or eating. The mask mandate is in effect through at least March 18. Southwest is facing similar pressure from its flight attendants’ union, TWU Local 556. “We have adamantly and unequivocally informed management that resuming sales of alcohol while the mask mandate is in place has the great potential to increase customer non-compliance and misconduct issues,” Lyn Montgomery, president of Southwest flight attendants’ union. Southwest and American Airlines last May said they would hold off on plans bringing back alcohol, in American’s case to domestic and short-haul international coach, because of disruptive passenger behavior that in some cases included physical assault against crew members. “Customers have expressed a desire for more beverage options, so we’re delighted to restore additional on-board offerings as a part of the Southwest Hospitality that our Customers know and love,” Tony Roach, Southwest’s vice president of customer experience and customer relations said in a statement. https://www.yahoo.com/news/alcohol-sales-return-southwest-flights-043745041.html GRADUATE RESEARCH SURVEY Calling all Part 135 Operators, are you concerned about having an effective SMS? With safety management system (SMS) regulations on the near horizon for 14 CFR 135 operators, it is important to identify barriers to having an effective SMS. A significant challenge to implementing and maintaining a robust SMS is obtaining frontline employee participation. An SMS needs that frontline information to help identify hazards, mitigate risks, and monitor risk controls. My name is Jason Starke, and I am a doctoral candidate at Northcentral University. Please help me in my research to determine if there is a relationship between servant leadership, organizational commitment, and engagement in the SMS (i.e., safety citizenship behavior). If you meet all the following criteria, I would really appreciate your participation: · 18 year of age or older; · Employed by an organization that conducts operations under 14 CFR 135; · Employed by an organization that has implemented a safety management system; and · Employed as a flight crew member (cockpit or cabin) and/or as an aircraft mechanic. The survey only takes roughly 10 minutes to complete and will ask you questions about: · Servant leadership characteristics of your immediate supervisor or manager; · Your current level of commitment to your organization; and · Your perception of the degree to which you feel certain safety behaviors and safety management activities are part of your job responsibilities. Again, please help with the research on this important topic so that we can understand how servant leadership positively influences employee engagement in the SMS.
