"It was so severe; it felt like the aircraft was dropping," Linda, 74, told the BBC. "I noticed my Kindle and Geoff's phone had fallen to the floor, and I thought the plane was going down." As Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 plummeted around 6,000 feet over Myanmar in May 2024, Geoff, 73, fell on top of his wife, crushing her into the armrest. A doctor on board administered CPR and Linda was taken to a Bangkok hospital. It was two days before she learned her husband had died — suffering a heart attack during the extreme turbulence. She spent 10 days in hospital before being airlifted back to Bristol with a broken back, the BBC reports. "When I got separated from Geoff, I knew he was in a bad way, but nothing prepared me for hearing he had died," Linda told the BBC. "It was absolutely devastating." Now, more than two years later, Linda has filed proceedings at London's High Court seeking damages from Singapore Airlines. What the official investigation found Singapore's Transport Safety Investigation Bureau (TSIB) published its final report into the SQ321 incident in May 2026 — nearly two years after the event, according to AsiaOne. Both pilots reported no weather radar returns on their displays in the 15 minutes before impact, and neither saw clouds when looking out the cockpit window — while four nearby aircraft noted widespread clouds over Myanmar. "The investigation team is unable to understand why the flight crew of the occurrence flight did not see the widespread clouds," TSIB stated. One theory is the aircraft's weather radar may have malfunctioned. TSIB noted the aircraft had logged similar radar anomalies on three separate occasions before the incident. In the letter, ALPA India president Capt Sam Thomas said experienced commanders and senior pilots were leaving Air India Express and, to a lesser extent, other parts of the group, arguing that pilots with years of operational experience were not simply numbers on a manpower sheet but “one of an airline’s most valuable safety assets”. The pilots’ body asked the Tata leadership to commission an independent review across Air India Group airlines, covering pilot attrition, remuneration and benefits, roster practices, fatigue data, grade-level fairness, cockpit experience levels, fleet-transition policies, training standards and the effectiveness of the group’s safety management systems. “The loss of experience must be arrested,” ALPA said, warning that attrition, cockpit experience levels and frequent transitions between Airbus and Boeing fleets needed closer scrutiny. The association linked its concerns to three incidents in 2026 — a Boeing 737 MAX 8 hard landing at Phuket on March 26, an Airbus A321 tailstrike during a go-around at Bengaluru on May 21 and an August Phuket-Delhi A320 in-flight control event. ALPA stressed that it was neither prejudging these incidents nor attributing them to pilot experience before formal findings. However, it said the “concentration of significant operational events” raised questions over whether the group’s safety management system, flight operations quality assurance programme, training systems and manpower policies were adequately identifying risks created by attrition, fleet transitions and diminishing command experience. In one of its strongest observations, ALPA said merely remaining within regulatory limits should not be considered sufficient for an airline aspiring to compete with the world’s best. “Minimum regulatory compliance should not be the benchmark,” it said. The association argued that international safety principles recognise that remaining within prescribed flight and duty-time limits does not, by itself, eliminate fatigue. It called for scientific fatigue-risk management that goes beyond scheduling pilots to the maximum permissible regulatory limits, besides stable rosters that allow pilots to plan family and personal commitments. ALPA also sought adequate rest, professional respect and reasonable career progression, warning that uncertainty over seniority, fleet movement and promotions could weaken retention. The association called for limits on operating near physiological limits and sought a “non-punitive safety and fatigue-reporting culture”, under which pilots could raise concerns without fear of career consequences. ALPA said pilot retention should not be viewed merely as a dispute over salaries, human resources or industrial relations. “Retention of experienced pilots must be recognised as part of an airline’s safety strategy,” it said. The association urged Air India and Air India Express to adopt a comprehensive retention framework, including competitive and periodically reviewed remuneration, predictable rosters, meaningful retirement benefits and transparent career progression. It also sought fleet-transition policies that preserve cockpit experience, particularly when pilots move between Airbus and Boeing aircraft. ALPA said global best practice increasingly treats pilot compensation, fatigue management, scheduling, leave, retirement benefits, duty travel and quality of life as interconnected elements of attracting and retaining experienced pilots. Addressing Noel Tata, Capt Thomas said the Tata name carried expectations beyond quarterly financial performance and argued that the transformation of Air India could not come at the expense of cockpit experience. “The fundamental question is simple: are we identifying and acting on the warning signs before they become accidents?” ALPA said. Boeing offers integrated, retractable airstairs as an option on the 737NG and 737 MAX, and Ryanair is one of the rare operators to have and use them. While the equipment gives an operator more autonomy and may reduce costs, the design of the aircraft’s stairs makes them trickier to use than the conventional stairs or bridges rented from an airport. The study follows a report ANSV released in April. The ANSV measured events of falls during passenger boarding and disembarkation in Italy over three years, from 2023-25. Of the 104 events, 85 (or approximately 82%) involved falls from the airstairs of the 737. “The operator involved is Ryanair, which ... uses the airstairs for disembarkation from the aircraft front (for disembarkation from the rear of the aircraft, the external staircase is provided by the airport operators),” the ANSV noted. To avoid statistical biases, the bureau took into account the high proportion of travelers flying Ryanair in Italy and falls from airport-supplied stairs. The rates are significantly higher with Ryanair. “The study identifies an issue with the airstairs of the 737 in relation to flights operated by Ryanair,” ANSV said. “Identifying a higher frequency in a specific context (type of stairs and disembarkation procedures) suggests that organizational or operational aspects may mitigate exposure to risk.” The airstairs consist of 12 steps, approximately 61 cm (24 in.) wide, 20 cm high and with a tread depth of approximately 25 cm. With an angle of 35 deg., it is steeper than airport-supplied stairs. It is narrower, as standard width is considered to be 100 cm at a minimum, ANSV said. Moreover, it has a first step that differs from the others: it is approximately 19 cm high and trapezoidal in shape. Following an incident in 2021, the Irish Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) published a recommendation in 2023. “It is recommended that the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) undertakes a safety promotion campaign to highlight to passengers and crew, the behaviors which will minimize their personal risk of falling whilst embarking or disembarking an aircraft,” it said. After an accident in 2024, the Spanish civil aviation safety investigation authority (CIAIAC) issued more stringent recommendations in 2025. It urged Ryanair to only use certified airport equipment for passenger boarding and disembarkation. Nevertheless, CIAIAC also recommended a redesign to decrease the stairs’ slope, reduce the height of the riser and increase the tread’s depth, adding Boeing and Ryanair should implement additional mitigation measures to minimize the risk of a fall. EASA should review the use of the airstairs, CIAIAC added. ANSV endorsed CIAIAC’s and AAIU’s recommendations, without adding any. It noted Ryanair’s updated disembarkation procedure, which requests the cabin crew to provide the passengers with the announcement in the language of departure and arrival countries. The announcement, although it applies to all stairs or bridges, includes the recommendation to use the handrail. Alexander Mamonov, 62, is listed in court papers as a Hollywood resident who once worked for the Russian national airline Aeroflot. He was charged with leading a scheme to secretly ship $900,000 in parts to the airline: 300 oil filters, an over-temperature shutoff valve and an air data inertial reference unit. According to federal prosecutors, Mamonov lied to two U.S. suppliers — one in New Jersey and one in Pompano Beach — about the parts’ destination, claiming they were intended for countries including China and the United Arab Emirates. He allegedly conspired with Ignat Vakorin, who is currently a fugitive, according to an indictment handed up by a federal grand jury in April 2025. Vakorin handled parts procurements for a firm in Moscow, according to the government. In 2022, the year Russian troops staged a mass invasion of Ukraine, Aeroflot and other Russian airlines were banned from receiving goods of American origin, including Boeing-manufactured planes and parts. The ban was part of a sweeping set of sanctions that continue to hamper commercial aviation in Russia. In late 2025, the industry publication AeroTime reported that Aeroflot was cannibalizing Boeing parts from cargo planes with the intent of transferring them to passenger planes. Prior to the invasion, Russia operated 1,500 to 1,800 Western-made commercial aircraft, the publication said. But sanctions imposed by the U.S. and European Union cut off Russian carriers from new aircraft, spare parts, and maintenance by certified sources. The Justice Department has been aggressive in its prosecution of violators. Last week, at a jury trial overseen by U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams, Mamonov was convicted on 12 counts, including illegal export of items subject to the federal Export Control Reform Act, conspiracy to commit smuggling, smuggling of goods, submitting false or misleading export information, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. In a post-trial filing, Miami defense attorney Richard Cooper, who represents Mamonov, asked the court to allow his client to remain free on a $500,000 bond until his sentencing. As collateral, Mamonov would put up a real estate property interest in Hollywood, as well as a late-model BMW and a Mercedes. Cooper noted that while out on bond before the trial, his client followed his terms of release. Sentencing has been scheduled for late November. Government vows more scrutiny The Justice Department, meanwhile, declared its intention to prosecute violators of U.S. sanctions. “Russia cannot evade American sanctions and export controls by routing its purchases through South Florida,” Jason A. FIP’s membership database listed 5,479 members as of August 21, 2026, covering pilots from airline, corporate, helicopter, general aviation and former military backgrounds. In an August 24 letter to Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, FIP requested representation on relevant Ministry, DGCA and AAIB committees and task forces, as well as a formal mechanism for consultation on draft regulations and Civil Aviation Requirements. Areas identified by FIP for pilot participation include pilot training and competency standards, Flight and Duty Time Limitations (FDTL), Fatigue Risk Management Systems (FRMS), licensing, human factors, Safety Management Systems, occurrence reporting, runway safety, psychoactive substance testing, accident investigation and pilot recruitment and retention. FIP said it had received assurances during interactions with the Department-Related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture and the Public Accounts Committee in December 2025 that it would be consulted on aviation safety and policy matters, but said a structured mechanism had not yet been established. The request comes while DGCA continues to oversee an expanding flight-training sector. AFM previously reported that India had 41 approved Flying Training Organisations across 63 flying bases as of April 2026, with around 3,500 available student-training positions, while Indian FTOs produced 1,035 Commercial Pilot Licence holders during 2025. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced a significant milestone in the development of next-generation aviation, highlighting demonstrations involving a remotely piloted hybrid-electric aircraft designed to transport cargo. The organisation announced on 31 August that Elroy Air, a US-based UAM developer, and the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development had conducted a hybrid-electric demonstration flight to test cargo deliveries using remotely piloted aircraft at Houma-Terrebonne Airport (HUM) in Louisiana. This is the first remotely piloted aircraft test flight under the FAA’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP). According to the FAA, the development “represents an important step toward integrating new propulsion technologies and autonomous or remotely operated aircraft into the wider aviation system.” The FAA announces first remotely-piloted cargo flights The test flight was part of a series of demonstrations using Elroy Air’s Chaparral aircraft as the US Department of Transportation works to safely integrate Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) aircraft into the National Airspace System. Chaparral is described as a “highly automated hybrid-electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) system designed to move heavy cargo by air between non-traditional sites.” “This demonstration with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development provides data to help turn these concepts from trial to deployment,” said FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford. “These test flights demonstrate how these new aircraft can expand cargo delivery options to communities nationwide and improve our logistics infrastructure,” he added. Adding to the comments, Elroy Air’s CEO, Andrew Clare, said that its Chaparral had been designed and built to move heavy cargo autonomously in the places that need it most, including offshore energy platforms, industrial supply chains, disaster response, and communities beyond the reach of traditional infrastructure. He added that the first flights conducted in Louisiana were the first step in the EIPP process, and that his company was “ready to deliver.” Hybrid-electric aviation is gathering pace Hybrid-electric aviation has attracted growing attention as manufacturers and technology companies seek ways to reduce fuel consumption, emissions, and operating costs. Unlike conventional aircraft that rely entirely on traditional turbine or piston engines, hybrid-electric systems combine electric propulsion with another energy source, potentially allowing aircraft to operate more efficiently while maintaining the range required for commercial missions. Depending on the aircraft’s design and operating conditions, electric propulsion could reduce fuel consumption and emissions, while remote operation could lower some of the costs associated with maintaining an onboard flight crew. However, the technology remains at an important testing stage. Before remotely piloted aircraft can become a routine part of commercial aviation, regulators and operators must demonstrate that these systems can meet the same rigorous safety expectations applied to conventional aircraft. FAA’s role in emerging aviation technology The FAA plays a central role in evaluating new aviation technologies in the United States. Its involvement in demonstrations such as these allows regulators to gain practical experience with aircraft that operate differently from traditional aircraft. Remotely piloted aircraft introduce several regulatory and operational questions. Authorities must consider how pilots on the ground communicate with aircraft, how aircraft respond to changing weather and traffic conditions, and how operators handle unexpected situations. Airspace integration is another major consideration. Commercial cargo aircraft must be able to safely share airspace with passenger planes, business aviation, helicopters and other aircraft. Reliable communication, navigation, surveillance and control systems will therefore be essential to the future deployment of remotely operated aircraft. Hybrid-electric propulsion also creates its own certification challenges. Regulators must evaluate batteries, electric motors, power-management systems and the interaction between electric and conventional propulsion components. Demonstration flights provide valuable real-world data that can help inform future standards and certification requirements.
