The Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue said 3 of the injured victims were listed in critical condition at a hospital ... and the 2 others were also hospitalized after being assessed, but their conditions were not released. Dispatch audio from Broadcastify revealed that the plane collided with a truck on the roadway. Authorities said one of the 5 people killed was found under the plane's right wing. Firefighters rushed to the scene to put out flames that had erupted in the smoking carcass of the aircraft. Fox News reported that a fire flared inside one of the engines. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating. In a press briefing, National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said the cargo plane overran the runway upon landing back from San Juan and "struck navigational aids and equipment." The plane then impacted a van operated by a cleaning service, killing five of the seven people inside the vehicle. After breaking through a perimeter fence, the plane struck an SUV outside the airport, but it's unclear how many people were inside this vehicle. Homendy said there were two crew members on board the plane at the time of the accident but said the NTSB can't comment on their health status and will leave that to local authorities. The NTSB chair said investigators were able to recover the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder—commonly referred to as the "black boxes"—from the plane. According to local officials, five other people were injured in the crash and three of them were taken to hospital in a critical condition. What To Watch For Homendy refused to divulge too many other details about the accident but noted that the NTSB will hold another press briefing on Tuesday. When asked about the aircraft's speed, she said the agency may share that detail on Tuesday after checking with the flight data recorder. She also noted that the agency will conduct interviews with the plane's crew and others to learn more about the landing. key background The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, as a Boeing 767-300 with Amazon's livery overran the runway at Miami International Airport. Geoff Bennett: There are many questions being asked about this accident and the landing. Our aviation correspondent, Miles O'Brien, is here with more. So, Miles, You've looked closely at the video of this landing. What stands out to you? Miles O'Brien: Geoff, what I see is a non-stabilized approach in non-stable meteorological conditions. The wind was gusty. There was a tailwind, which had a crosswind component. The aircraft as it came down ended up significantly above what we call the glide slope, which is the imaginary slide which takes you down to the runway. The crew tried to correct it and dove precipitously toward that altitude they should have been at, picking up speed. So, by the time we see them in this video, it appears this aircraft is sort of diving for the runway with a tailwind, which makes it faster over the ground and, in addition to that, a crosswind, which is what caused that left wing to go up. And this is the key point to think about here, Geoff. They landed at about 185 miles an hour in speed, which is much higher than you would expect, about halfway down a 9,000-foot runway. And then you see that left wing lift up, and the left landing gear is not on the concrete. That's crucial, because that's what tells the airplane that it can deploy reverse thrust and the spoilers, the speed breaks on the wing. Without those wheels on the ground, the crew would not have been able to do that. And so they left the runway at a very high rate of speed, about 130 miles an hour into the grass. And that's what we saw. Geoff Bennett: So, Miles, at what point should a crew abandon a landing like that? Miles O'Brien: Well, the textbook says, if you have an unstabilized approach -- and they were about three miles out when they were they were way above that so-called glide slope -- that probably would have been a prudent time to knock it off, as opposed to trying to dive down to catch it and get toward it. But, certainly, if they just elected to continue and try to correct, which happens, by the time you are floating over the runway and about halfway down it, that would be the time to initiate what we call the go-around. Geoff Bennett: And the plane, as we saw on that video, it goes beyond the runway and through the safety area at the end. What is that area designed to do? Miles O'Brien: Well, there's about 1,000 feet between the end of that runway to the road. That is what the FAA requires for a runway that it arrives and departs with large aircraft. So that is to the book. However, there are other ways that you can slow down an aircraft in these situations. Geoff Bennett: And that brings us to something called EMAS. What is that and could it have stopped this plane? Miles O'Brien: engineered material arresting system. It's basically breakable concrete. When the wheels of an aircraft get in it, it's like quicksand. It will slow an aircraft down very quickly. It's designed to accept and slow down an aircraft coming in at, say, about 80 miles an hour. This aircraft, as we say, was arriving at the end of the runway at about 130 miles an hour. So it's unclear what the EMAS might have done in this case, but certainly it would have slowed it down further. That said, the FAA does not require this sort of engineered material at the end of a runway if there's 1,000 feet of runway safety area, which Miami has in this case. Geoff Bennett: And that's why, one would imagine, Miami did not have this EMAS system. Miles O'Brien: Exactly. Now, there'll be some questions raised about this. Should EMAS just be everywhere, just as another layer of safety? And there'll be some questions, of course, about what the crew was doing. And, of course, when that cockpit voice recorder is analyzed, as well as the flight data recorder, many of those questions will become much clearer, and a lot of the speeds and footages and distances will become more precise, and we can understand what happened here? https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/what-went-wrong-before-an-amazon-cargo-jet-barreled-off-the-runway-in-miami Federal investigators probe Amazon jet crash that killed 5 in Miami MIAMI — The five people killed when an Amazon cargo jet ran off a runway at Miami International Airport were all inside a van carrying seven people from a cleaning company and an SUV hit outside airport property, National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said Monday. Homendy called the scene of Sunday’s crash “utter devastation.” She didn’t detail how many people were in the SUV or where the dead were located. Homendy walked the route the Boeing 767 followed, noting tire marks from the pavement into the grass, the destroyed van carrying the cleaning crew, torn fencing, navigational equipment and the crushed SUV outside airport property. The debris included vehicle air bags, equipment from the vehicles, the airplane and the airport, and “fencing everywhere,” Homendy said. “It’s pretty extensive. Hard to see and I’m sure it must have been very difficult for the responders as well,” Homendy said. The airplane, all told, traveled about 1,300 feet past the paved surface. Debris was everywhere, she said. “I would describe it in one word as devastating, utter devastation,” Homendy said. The van with seven people inside — owned by Professional Ocean Service Corp., an airline cleaning contractor — was “torn apart,” she said. Homendy said the NTSB would issue more information on Tuesday, possibly including information on speed that is confirmed by the flight data recorder. Federal investigators examining the crash spent Monday determining whether the plane touched down too late to stop safely. Video of Sunday’s landing appears to show the Boeing 767 remaining airborne well down the runway before touching down. Aviation experts said investigators will seek to determine exactly where the plane landed, whether it was beyond the normal touchdown zone, and why the pilots did not abandon the landing. Investigators will also examine the plane’s speed and braking, weather and wind conditions, the aircraft’s mechanical condition and other factors that could have contributed to the deadly overrun. The aircraft on Sunday flew from Cincinnati to Miami and then to San Juan, Puerto Rico. It was returning to Miami when it overran the runway around 2 p.m. and plowed across a road used by warehouse workers and other businesses that surround the airport. Aside from the five who died, three people were critically injured and two others were hospitalized with less severe injuries, officials said. The crash, which sent thick black smoke billowing into the sky, trapped the pilot and co-pilot in the cockpit and some occupants in cars, said Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Ray Jadallah. The agency said crews also had to extricate a person who was trapped under a vehicle. The typical landing zone for a plane is within the first 3,000 feet of a runway, experts said. If the cargo jet was beyond that area, it should have aborted the landing and gone around for another try, aviation safety expert Steve Arroyo said. Mary Schiavo, who is a pilot and former inspector general of the Transportation Department, said video posted online shows the Amazon plane floating above the runway for an extended period without flaring the nose upward to force the main landing gear onto the ground. It wasn’t raining at the time, but dark storm clouds loomed and strong winds were reported. Schiavo said that if the plane had a tailwind, that could have contributed to it floating farther down the runway. “A tailwind would certainly add to your troubles if you’ve already given up a good chunk of the runway by not touching down and landing right away,” Schiavo said. The Miami airport is not equipped with arresting systems that the Federal Aviation Administration says have been installed at more than 120 airports nationwide to safely stop planes that do go past the end of a runway. Those beds of lightweight, crushable material at the end of a runway have been credited by the FAA with helping save at least 497 lives aboard planes that overran runways. Miami’s airport appears to be in compliance and wasn’t required to have an arresting system because it has a 1,000-foot safety buffer at the end of its runways, said Mike O’Donnell, the FAA’s former director of airport safety and accident investigations. The Prime Air plane came to rest beside a roadway near two semitrucks, images showed. The aircraft appeared to be resting on its belly and was largely intact despite the fire. The crash halted flights at the busy travel hub for much of Sunday afternoon and continued to hamper air travel into Monday. Miami International Airport said that two of its four runways remained closed Monday and that operations were to be affected throughout the day because of aircraft and flight crews not arriving there due to Sunday’s cancellations after the crash. An airport spokesperson said there were 160 cancellations and more than 300 delayed flights Sunday, plus an additional 69 canceled flights Monday through midafternoon. Flight tracking sites were reporting widespread delays at the airport. Japan is tightening measures against private jet pilots who fail to follow instructions from air traffic control, with three strikes resulting in a ban from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport. The move comes as the government tries to attract business jets and other private jets to airports nationwide. But as the number of private jet flights increase, so too have pilots who fail to comply with traffic controls, which could lead to large-scale accidents. Last year, there were five instances of foreign-owned private jets not following instructions from air traffic control, according to the transport ministry. “We are taking those five cases seriously,” said Ken Sawahara, a transport ministry official on aviation safety. “We have been raising awareness on the issue, but we have imposed the restrictions to make it more effective.” Under new rules introduced by the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry in May, pilots who do not follow instructions will be interviewed and have their traffic logs checked. If they are judged to have had no good reason for their noncompliance, they will be logged. If three such cases are recorded, the pilot will be banned from landing or taking off from Haneda Airport for three years. However, they will still be allowed if they fly as a co-pilot. Pilots with three strikes will have their slates wiped clean after three years. If a pilot with up to two cases goes without any new logged cases for a year, their count will be reduced by one. This means those with one strike will have their count reduced to zero if they go a year without any noncompliance issues. The penalty system is being tested on business jets and smaller private jets at Haneda Airport, and there are no plans to expand it to other airports for now, the transport ministry’s Sawahara said. In 2025, there were 23,650 business jet departures and arrivals nationwide, up from 12,921 in 2016. Of the 23,650 departures and arrivals, 4,584 were at Haneda. Pilots for scheduled passenger and cargo flights are not subject to the restrictions. Japan has been pushing to attract business jet flights in a bid to become a business hub in Asia. As part of the effort, in 2016, departure and arrival slots for business jets and other private jets at Haneda Airport were increased from eight to 16 a day. In August, Narita Airport, in Chiba Prefecture, opened a renovated terminal for business jet passengers with a large lounge and a new conference room, and started accepting domestic flights as well. The global business jet market is expected to grow from $72.1 billion in 2024 to $112.4 billion in 2030, according to Grand View Research, a market research and consulting company. "NO MORE SELLING BOMBARDIER IN THE UNITED STATES!" Trump wrote on Truth Social. "If they want our Market, they must build here, and stop treating America like a 'piggybank.'" Bombardier responded in a statement by highlighting its existing presence across the country. According to its statement, the company employs workers directly in more than 20 states, with physical locations in Kansas, Texas, Arizona, Florida, Connecticut, Illinois, Delaware, California, Washington D.C., and New Jersey. Altogether, about 2,800 American businesses across 47 states are part of its supply chain, with Bombardier channeling more than $2.5 billion a year to those partners. Bombardier also pointed out that its Red Oak, Texas facility turns out wings for its business jets, and that a plant near Los Angeles handles flight control components. Bombardier said it plans to open a new facility in Fort Wayne, Indiana later this year. "Bombardier values its great partnership with American companies and its U.S. employees," the company said in a statement. "Our plan is to continue to invest in our people, our customers and the communities in which we operate across the country." U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, a Kansas Republican, said in a statement that Bombardier supports more than 1,000 workers in Wichita. Senator Moran said he reached out to the Trump administration to flag Bombardier's economic importance to Kansas — both its direct workforce and the broader supply chain around Wichita — and vowed to fight to preserve and expand the company's footprint in the state. Trump's threat comes as the U.S.-Canada trade relationship has deteriorated sharply. Canada imposed counter-tariffs on $27.6 billion worth of American goods on Tuesday, with duties ranging from 15% to 50% across hundreds of product categories. The measures followed the collapse of trade negotiations, after which the U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion in Canadian goods under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930. Canada's retaliatory tariffs came after trade talks broke down in late August. Air Cairo, a low-cost Egyptian airline, is looking to acquire about 15 Airbus A320 family narrowbody aircraft with options for 15 more. The deal could be finalized soon, as the airline seeks to expand its network of over 60 destinations in the Middle East and Europe. Air Cairo already operates around thirty Airbus A320s, along with a few Embraer and ATR aircraft. This move follows Ethiopian Airlines' pursuit of up to ten Boeing long-haul cargo jets, as both airlines look to grow their fleets. According to sources familiar with the deal, the Egyptian budget airline intends to acquire approximately 15 Airbus A320 family aircraft, with options for an additional 15 units. The sources who requested anonymity also revealed that the deal could be finalized before the week ends, as seen on Bloomberg. Established over a decade ago, Air Cairo serves more than 60 destinations across the Middle East and Europe. The airline operates a fleet of approximately thirty Airbus A320 aircraft, alongside a small number of Embraer regional jets and ATR turboprops. Air Cairo’s planned purchase of these Airbuses mimics the recent intent of Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest airline. Ethiopian Airlines Boeing purchase It was reported last week that Ethiopian Airlines was closing in on ordering as many as ten Boeing long-haul cargo aircraft as it prepares for a $12.5 billion airport designed to handle 3.7 million tonnes of freight annually. The potential deal could involve two existing-generation Boeing 777 freighters alongside several of the newer 777-8F cargo jets, according to Reuters, which cited two aviation industry sources familiar with the talks. If finalized, the deal would strengthen one of Boeing’s longest-running relationships with an African airline while helping the US aircraft manufacturer bridge the transition from its current generation of cargo jets to the 777-8F. Boeing at the same time projected that Africa’s commercial aircraft fleet will more than double over the next two decades, creating demand for 1,165 new planes and 75,000 additional aviation workers. The US-based aircraft manufacturer noted that estimates suggest the expansion will also create a $140 billion aviation-services market covering aircraft maintenance, repairs, modifications and digital services. Ethiopian Airlines currently operates 12 Boeing 777 freighters, giving it one of the largest dedicated cargo fleets among African airlines. The carrier transported about 897,000 tonnes of cargo during its 2025/26 financial year, representing a 16% increase from the previous year. Airbus SE's narrowbody aircraft, led by the popular A320 series, have established themselves as key players in the worldwide commercial aviation industry. The family comprises the A319, A320, and A321, as well as later variants including the A320neo, A321neo, and the long-range A321XLR.
